Outdoor Research Insights (ORI) is a New Hampshire–based consulting firm that helps communities, land managers, and organizations make informed, practical decisions about recreation, tourism, and outdoor spaces. 

We are outdoor users ourselves—hikers, skiers, backpackers, and riders—and bring that real-world perspective to every project. ORI works independently and collaborates with a trusted network of specialists to ensure each project has the right expertise for the task at hand. 

Our approach blends on-the-ground experience with clear, evidence-informed analysis to help clients move from ideas to action.

About the Principal

ORI is led by Dr. Mike Ferguson, an applied recreation and tourism consultant with extensive experience working with communities, land managers, nonprofits, and public agencies across New England and beyond.

His consulting work focuses on helping organizations navigate complex recreation and infrastructure challenges through clear analysis, practical planning, and implementation-focused support.

Dr. Ferguson brings a deep understanding of outdoor recreation systems, visitor behavior, energy development, and community decision-making, paired with a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach.
